Interior Drain systems can be a cost effective solution to keeping water out of your basement. BUT before you sign the contract or make that decision be aware of the causes of basement wall failure to make sure you aren’t creating or masking a problem down the road.
Block walls often bow inward (creating a horizontal crack in the block wall) from water pressure. The same water pressure is causing your basement to leak. But unlike exterior basement waterproofing that reduces hydrostatic (water) pressure on the external walls – an interior drain allows that water pressure to continue to build. This doesn’t mean an interior drain is a bad system. But if you install this system you MUST be aware of the root problem of your basement water problem and solve that along with the interior drain system. Cleaning gutters, piping downspouts and changing your grade will be the first steps to reduce the water pressure on your home. So if you are putting an interior drain system in, make sure you carefully examine the exterior to address the sources of the water as well as installing the drain system to solve the symptoms.
